Hannah Montana fans are getting the best of both worlds, leaving the less entertaining aspects to the show’s lawyers and publicists. A lawsuit brought against the Disney Channel by an award-winning comedy writer who claims he pitched the original idea for Hannah Montana and was never compensated for his efforts was referred Friday to mediation in the hope that the two sides can cut a deal. Buddy Sheffield sued parent company ABC Cable Networks Group on Aug. 23, alleging breach of implied contract, breach of confidence, unfair competition and unjust enrichment. He is seeking unspecified damages.
The Aussie popster has split from her rocker husband, Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns, after four years of couplehood. They announced the demise of their marriage in a joint statement Friday, chalking up the breakup to “career demands.” “While we are very sad that our marriage has ended, we want to make it clear that our parting is amicable, and we remain friends,” they said. “This mutual decision has not been taken lightly or quickly. “However, our career demands and our lives in different parts of the world have brought us to the point where unfortunately this difficult decision was necessary for both of us. “We have simply grown apart through not being able to spend enough time together.” Apparently, it didn’t help matters that Imbruglia, 32, primarily resides in England, while Johns and his band are headquartered Down Under.
Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston may no longer be coupled, but they were in unison on one thing Friday: skipping court. The former lovebirds were both no-shows for a scheduled proceeding Friday.
It’s more like catch her if you can. A woman who went on the lam in 2005 after allegedly bashing Leonardo DiCaprio with a broken beer bottle is now in police custody in Toronto. Toronto police became aware of the American warrant on Wilson when she was charged for assault in a separate incident in Toronto in February 2006. “It was the day after that we found out (about the DiCaprio incident),” Toronto police Det. Edward Campbell said today. He added that Toronto police contacted L.A. police authorities but have not heard back about an extradition order. “As far as I know they (the United States) haven’t made an application for her extradition,”Campbell said, noting that the two police authorities are not working together on the case. A spokeswoman for the L.A. police department said today it’s unclear if an extradition order will be executed for Wilson. “The crime she has been accused of in Toronto is far more serious than the crime she is accused of here,” the spokeswoman said. In addition to being charged with assault with a deadly weapon in relation to the DiCaprio attack, Wilson is currently awaiting the outcome of her Toronto trial on charges of assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm. The Canadian charges stem from an altercation with a male roommate at a Toronto apartment in February 2006. A Canadian wide warrant was issued on Wilson when it was believed she fled the province while on bail. Wilson turned herself in to Toronto police in July 2006. Campbell said Wilson is currently on bail in Toronto and has lived in the city for “many years.”
